Installation for New Sainsbury's Store
Overview:
The primary objective of the project was to improve operational efficiencies across the store estate while supporting their wider sustainability agenda. Airkool was tasked with delivering solutions that would help the client reduce energy consumption, lower carbon emissions, and make measurable progress toward their decarbonisation commitments.
Our Solution:
Airkool delivered a comprehensive mechanical, Electrical, and Refrigeration refurbishment for the 18,000 sq/ft store, ensuring all works aligned with the client’s decarbonization strategy. We began by removing the site’s existing gas-fired heating systems, outdated lighting, and high-GWP refrigerants to create a more efficient and sustainable foundation.
Our team designed and installed a new CO₂ refrigeration system to replace legacy equipment, significantly reducing the store’s environmental impact. To support the heating demand, we implemented a 200 kW heat pump paired with a bespoke RHIC system, which was engineered and manufactured on-site by our in-house plumbing team.
We also replaced all ageing R410A air-conditioning units with modern R32 split systems, providing improved performance with a lower global warming potential. Collectively, these upgrades positioned the store for long-term energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, and compliance with the client’s wider decarbonisation programme.
Outcome:
By modernising the store’s mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration infrastructure, Airkool successfully delivered a future-ready, energy-efficient environment that supports the client’s long-term decarbonisation commitments. The upgrades significantly reduced carbon emissions, improved system performance, and lowered operational costs—providing a scalable model for sustainable refurbishment across the wider estate.
